Five faculty earn awards for global research travel

PULLMAN, Wash. – Five faculty members are recipients of the fifth annual International Research Travel Awards at Washington State University.

Erica Crespi (College of Arts and Sciences), Anne Marie Guerrettaz (College of Education), Kristin Lesseig (College of Education, WSU Vancouver), Min-Kyu Song (Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture) and Jonathan Wisor (Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, WSU Spokane) each will receive $2,000-$5,000 to assist in promotion and strengthening of international research collaborations.

The recipients “demonstrate the solutions WSU research can offer to a wide variety of global challenges,” said Chris Keane, WSU vice president for research. “This type of work is vital to our success as a global institution,” said Asif Chaudhry, WSU vice president for international programs.

This year’s research topics include: assessing health consequences of oil sands mine pollution and fire on amphibians; revitalizing disappearing native languages; innovations in the preparation of secondary mathematics teachers; advanced energy storage systems for transport and grid applications based on earth-abundant materials; and polysomnographic detection of predictive biomarkers in sleep disorders.

Award winners plan to travel to Austria, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway and South Korea.

The awards are sponsored by the Office of International Programs and the Office of Research.
