Athletic training cleans up at industry’s regional meeting

BOISE, Idaho – Students in the College of Education athletic training program won the Quiz Bowl for the third straight year at a regional industry gathering, while other Washington State University students earned research awards, scholarships and leadership positions.

“Leadership and scholarship are stressed within our program and it is great to see what our students achieve each year,” said program director Kasee Hildenbrand following the recent Northwest Athletic Trainers’ Association (NWATA) annual meeting and clinical symposium in Boise. “We have an amazing program legacy at WSU, with Cougar alumni in every facet of the profession.”

WSU’s winning Quiz Bowl team – Ricky Ayala, Alee Bryan, Elias Whitefoot and alternate Jessie Dizenfeld – will compete at nationals in June in Baltimore.

“All four students were first-years in the program the first time we won,” Hildenbrand said. “As soon as we were announced as the winner, the Cougar fight song was being yelled in the crowd. We sang it loud and proud.”

Other WSU accomplishments:

  • Emily Estabrook won the student oral presentation category and travel grant to nationals with a presentation about upper respiratory infections in endurance athletes.
  • Nick Cromidas was selected district chair for the National Student Leadership Committee.
  • Meggie Stafne and Julianne Tanis were elected district president and secretary, respectively.
  • Bryan and Cromidas were both awarded NWATA scholarships.
