PULLMAN, Wash. – Virus mutation, regional aquaculture and the accuracy of international mortality statistics are some of the research projects of faculty who received the Fourth Annual International Research Travel Awards (IRTA) from Washington State University last week.

The winners are David Gang and Hanu Pappu, College of Agricultural, Human and Natural Resource Sciences; and Joanna Kelley, Vilma Navarro-Daniels, Mélanie-Angela Neuilly, Elissa Schwartz and Steven Tomsovic, College of Arts and Sciences.

“Collaborative research is essential to our success as a university,” said Asif Chaudhry, WSU vice president for international programs.

“This year’s winners illustrate the powerful range of collaborative and interdisciplinary work our researchers are doing on other continents,” said Chris Keane, WSU vice president for research. “They show the reach our work can have as we seek to have a positive impact on the state, nation and world.”

Each awardee receives $2,000-$5,000 to promote and strengthen international research collaborations. Full-time WSU faculty members who submitted applications that met IRTA guidelines were eligible for the awards, which are sponsored by the offices of international programs and research.

Award winners plan to travel to Austria, Chile, France, Germany, India, Mexico and Spain. Other research topics of the honorees include tissue imaging, the influence of Ancient Greek literature and culture on modern Latin American and Spanish film, disease control tactics in plants and wave packet dynamics for many-body systems.
