PULLMAN, Wash. – A free, public screening of the 1962 film “To Kill a Mockingbird” will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, in CUE 203 at Washington State University. It is the first Common Readings Tuesdays event in the year’s series around the book “Just Mercy,” by Bryan Stevenson.
“We start this year’s series with a showing of this classic film to provide some of the context and story that this year’s common reading will challenge and extend,” said Karen Weathermon, program co-director.
The film takes place in the fictional town of Maycomb, based on Monroeville, Ala., the home town of “Mockingbird” author Harper Lee. Monroeville celebrates its connection to Lee’s novel and the film, says Stevenson, while remaining blind to contemporary racial bias in its administration of justice.
The public is invited to hear Stevenson at the annual Common Reading Invited Lecture on Dec. 1. For more information on common reading events, visit http://commonreading.wsu.edu.
