PULLMAN, Wash. – Cable 8 Productions at Washington State University last weekend won a national award for a telethon about a local child’s illness.
The student-run TV station won best special broadcast from College Broadcasters Inc. (http://www.askcbi.org/), for “Find Frankie’s Diagnosis,” a one-hour broadcast that was the culmination of a year-long effort for the philanthropic Cougar Vision outreach program. Two other WSU productions were finalists: “Viral Vision: Profs Reading Tweets” for best comedy and “Cougnation Season 3, Episode 6,” for best sportscast.
“A philanthropic program like this gives students real experience toward their aspiring career, but also shows how community involvement is needed in whatever job you end up doing,” said Denise Gibbs, former vice president of public relations and alumni affairs for Cable 8, of the winning entry. “It is really connecting the WSU students with the Pullman community that makes the Cougar Vision outreach program work.”
Cable 8 raised more than $2,500 for Frankie Scott and his family over a series of three events, including a basketball tournament, a hot dog stand and a concert and raffle.
