PULLMAN, Wash. – Three Washington State University undergraduates are headed to England and Scotland this summer as WSU’s first recipients of Fulbright UK Summer Institute awards.
“It is quite an accomplishment for WSU to have three students accepted for the Fulbright UK,” said Sarah Ann Hones, director of the Distinguished Scholarships Program, part of the WSU Office of Undergraduate Education.
The students will experience the UK; develop their research, communication and presentation skills; and perform community service. The Fulbright program will cover most of their costs.
Joanna “Joey” Redmon, sophomore pre-pharmacy student from Spokane, Wash., will attend the University of Dundee and the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow for five weeks pursuing the topic of “Scotland: Identity, Culture and Innovation.”
Grace Reed, sophomore English major from University Place, Wash., is headed for Nottingham Trent University to study “Creativity, Culture, History and Heritage” for four weeks.
Alyssa Norris, freshman bioengineering student from North Pole, Alaska, will be at the University of Bristol to study “Slavery and the Atlantic Heritage.”
Twelve WSU undergraduates went through the rigorous process of applying for the awards. Robin Bond, clinical associate professor of classics in the WSU Honors College, mentored them.
