March 27: Seattle soloist joins VoJazz in free concert

VoJazz-2014-80PULLMAN, Wash. – Seattle based singer Greta Matassa will join Washington State University’s VoJazz for a free concert at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 27, in Bryan Hall. The evening will include a tribute to Charles Argersinger, an emeritus professor in the WSU School of Music who passed away in April.

VoJazz is WSU’s vocal jazz ensemble that performs jazz and popular music with and without an instrumental combo.

The concert will open with the flowing samba “New Day,” arranged by Jennifer Barnes, and the Lennon/McCartney tune, “Here, There and Everywhere,” arranged by Mac Huff. Matassa will present “Blue Prelude” with WSU faculty jazz musicians Greg Yasinitsky, Brian Ward, Dave Snider and Dave Jarvis.

VoJazz will continue with “Umbrella in the Rain,” an accompanied solo jazz chart featuring undergraduate baritone Connor Wolcott, and Argersinger’s funky arrangement of “Windmills of Your Mind,” with soloist John Hannan. The VoJazz combo will perform the Sonny Rollins tune, “Sonnymoon for Two,” followed by “Danger Zone,” performed by Matassa.

The concert will conclude with Steve Zegree’s arrangement of the haunting “A Night We Called It a Day,” followed by the Betty Carter tune, “Tight,” arranged by Matt Falker and sung by VoJazz with Matassa as soloist.

The concert is presented by the WSU School of Music and cosponsored by the Associated Students of WSU and Student Entertainment Board Arts. A UCORE-ARTS course, VoJazz is open to all WSU students pending an audition.
