Students OK tobacco-free campus, elect leaders

No-smoking-signPULLMAN, Wash. – Referendum 43-01, a policy for a tobacco-free campus, passed by 59.5 percent with 1,781 votes Wednesday. Jared Powell and LaKecia Farmer were elected president and vice president of the Associated Students of Washington State University.

They collected 1,747 votes, or 56.1 percent of the votes cast, to win the two-day election over Marissa Hice and Shawn Santomassimo. The total number of votes cast was 3,113, or 20.1 percent of the undergraduate enrollment of approximately 15,492 eligible voters.

ASWSU intends to work with an administrative task force charged with implementing the no-smoking policy, which must also be approved by the WSU Board of Regents.

Powell is ASWSU director of finance and a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He is pursing two degrees – one in political science pre-law and one in philosophy – and minors in ethics and sport management.

Farmer is senate pro-tempore for the ASWSU Senate. She is double majoring in political science and philosophy pre-law and minoring in comparative ethnic studies.
