Undergrad research award applications open through April 18

undergrad-researchPULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University students seeking funding for 2014-15 mentored research can access the online application through April 18 via http://UndergraduateResearch.wsu.edu. Applying in spring is new, and there is a new award.

“We plan to make awards of $1,000 or more to dozens of undergraduates,” said Shelley Pressley, director of the Office of Undergraduate Research. Students work with a mentor on research, scholarship and creative activities – “what we collectively call research,” Pressley said.

Spring applications for fall awards

Timing of the application process is changing to spring from fall.

“We weighed many factors and believe applications in spring for awards effective that fall will better align with students’ financial aid planning,” Pressley said.

‘Carson fellows’ join honors

A new fund – the Scott and Linda Carson Undergraduate Research Endowed Excellence Fund – will have its first awardees from this applicant pool.

The fund was created in 2013 by the Carsons, alumni who have supported the university generously for many years through their service and a wide range of gifts. Scott Carson has been a WSU regent since 2005 and is head of the $1 billion Campaign for WSU fundraising effort set to end in 2015.

“The Carsons are passionate about WSU, its students and education,” Pressley said. “We are deeply appreciative that they have chosen to invest in undergraduate researchers who are engaged in hands-on, real-world learning activities.

“Theirs is the first WSU-wide research fund that gives preference to upper-division students. The sophomores and juniors who receive this prestigious award will be recognized as ‘Carson Fellows.’”

Variety of awards

Other undergraduate research awards include Auvil fellows, Weir fellows and Fuentes-Kirk fellows. These are open to students in all majors on all campuses. An award from the DeVlieg Foundation grant is for students with majors in the College of Engineering and Architecture who are pursuing research in renewable energy.
