Feb. 5: Slave’s true story brought to life on stage

Actress-80PULLMAN, Wash. – In association with Young Audiences New York, Washington State University Performing Arts presents the Literature to Life® stage production of “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl,” by Harriet Jacobs, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, in Daggy Hall’s Jones Theatre.

“Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl,” performed by Cherita Armstrong, was adapted for the stage and directed by Wynn Handman.

Incidents_bookcover-250The celebrated narrative, first published in 1861, chronicles the author’s first person account of her life as a slave and the decisions and choices she made to gain freedom for herself and her children. It reveals, in shocking fashion, the traumas of slavery, particularly for women and children.

The performance is recommended for audiences age 13 and older.

The show relates Jacobs’ powerful and moving experiences during the seven years she spent hiding in “the loophole,” a crawl space in her grandmother’s attic. Illuminated by pre- and post-performance discussions, the production explores themes of resilience and survival.

Seating is reserved and tickets cost $14 for adults, $11 for seniors (60+) and $7 for students and youth. Free admission for WSU students is sponsored by the CougParents Program.

Tickets may be purchased in advance at TicketsWest outlets, including online at http://www.ticketswest.com, by phone at 800-325-7328 and at the Beasley Coliseum box office, open 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Friday. Same-day tickets may be purchased at the Daggy Hall ticket office beginning two hours before the performance.

Additional fees apply to online and phone purchases. Discounts are available to WSU Alumni Association members and groups of eight or more.

“Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl” is a WSU common reading program event.
