VICTORIA, B.C. – Washington State University rowing sophomore, Nicole Hare, has been named to Rowing Canada Aviron’s 2013 Under-23 Team and will compete with the women’s eight crew July 24-28 at the World Rowing U23 Championships in Linz, Austria, Rowing Canada Aviron announced this week.
“The Under 23 program is one of our most important development components leading to our senior team,” High Performance Director, Peter Cookson said. “The coaches have put a lot of effort into assessing and selecting a strong team to represent Canada at this year’s Under 23 World Championships.”
During her freshman season at WSU, Hare (Calgary, Alberta), competed in the varsity eight boat, helping lead her crew to a 14th-place finish at the 2013 NCAA Championships as the Cougars also placed 14th as a team. She was named the 2012 Junior Female Sculler of the Year by Rowing Canada Aviron in January and was the junior rower of the year for both the Calgary Rowing Club and Alberta Rowing Association in 2011. In 2010, Hare won gold at the Royal Canadian Henley in doubles competition and took first for Alberta in singles at the 2011 Western Canada Summer games.
Under-23 World Champions will be crowned in 21 events including the men’s single sculls, women’s single sculls, lightweight men’s single sculls, lightweight women’s single sculls, men’s double sculls, women’s double sculls, lightweight men’s double sculls, lightweight women’s double sculls, men’s quadruple sculls, women’s quadruple sculls, lightweight men’s quadruple sculls, lightweight women’s quadruple sculls, men’s pair, women’s pair, lightweight men’s pair, men’s four, women’s four, lightweight men’s four, men’s four with coxswain, men’s eight and women’s eight.
Hare is joined in the eight boat by Marissa Kump, Aleda Kawalek, Sarah Rothwell, Julie Calvert, Kathleen Morrison, Meghan Robinson, Luce Bourbeau and coxswain Ellen Fawcett.
Racing begins Wednesday, July 24, with heats. Semifinals will take place July 26-27, while finals will be held Saturday and Sunday, July 27-28.
