Behavioral interviewing helps employers find best candidates

SPOKANE, Wash. – Demand for training in behavioral interviewing is on the rise as employers increase hiring following the recession. A workshop on this method will be held 8-11 a.m. Tuesday, July 23, at the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at 665 N Riverpoint Blvd. There is no cost but pre-registration is requested at http://wsbdc.org/training-calendar.

Behavioral interviewing is based on the premise that past behavior predicts future behavior. The likelihood of success for a job candidate is assessed by soliciting examples of past job performance and evaluating them in light of new job requirements.

Behavioral interviewing was developed about 30 years ago by industrial psychologists. The workshop is based primarily on the work of industrial-organizational psychologist and consultant Paul Green (http://paulcgreen.com/about-paul-green).

Although the method is in wide use among larger organizations with human resource departments, many smaller and mid-sized companies would also benefit from this effective tool. The workshop will cover questions, interview techniques and strategies to obtain good information.

Jack Kaplan, an employer resource specialist at WorkSource, is the instructor. He has trained hundreds of hiring managers and supervisors since bringing this workshop to Spokane a few years ago. He will also share information about WorkSource On-the-Job and other training programs to help recruit employees.
