Vet biomedical research building wins civic design award

Vet. buildingPULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University’s recently completed Veterinary and Biomedical Research Building (VBRB) will receive a civic design award from the Washington Council of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

The award, which is intended to promote quality design in public projects and recognize public agencies striving to produce excellence in design, will be presented at an awards banquet May 23 at the Red Lion in downtown Seattle.

Jury considerations included design quality, functional utility, economy, environmental harmony, sustainability, accessibility, aesthetic delight, creativity, craftsmanship and innovation.

The VBRB brings physiology and neuroscience research programs under one roof and provides flexible research space for related disciplines.

Operationally, the building contains highly efficient mechanical systems designed to perform almost 40 percent better than similar research buildings. Features include runaround energy recovery, outside air tempering with rejected heat and cooling water, radiant heat, chilled beam cooling and daylight harvesting.

The building was designed by SRG Partnership, Inc. of Seattle and Portland.
