Kammerzell named special counsel to the university

PULLMAN, Wash. – Sharyl Kammerzell, who has served as division chief of the Washington State University division of the state attorney general’s office for nearly two years, has been named director of legal affairs and special counsel to the university.

She will manage the university’s legal affairs, advise senior administrators on legal policy issues and implementation of strategic initiatives, and serve as university representative in negotiations and mediations. She will serve as a liaison and work in coordination with the attorney general’s office and other state and federal offices in the oversight of WSU legal and regulatory affairs.

Before joining the attorney general’s office at WSU in November 2009, Kammerzell had been senior associate general counsel in the office of general counsel at the University of Idaho since 2002. She served as an assistant attorney general in the Oregon Department of Justice natural resources section 1998-2003.

She received a degree in politics from Mount Holyoke College in 1988 and a law degree from the University of Colorado School of Law in 1995.

Kammerzell also has worked in the Peace Corps in Kpalime, Togo, West Africa, clerked for the Oregon Supreme Court and done legal work on natural resource and Indian issues.

Following Kammerzell’s move, Attorney General Rob McKenna will be expected to appoint her successor to head the WSU office.  Antionette (Toni) Ursich, Kammerzell’s predecessor, will serve as interim division chief.
