Artist aims to inspire self-expression, creativity

Dos Mujeres by Simón Silva

RICHLAND – An artist known for his portraits of farm workers will speak to educators and students on Friday, Oct. 15, as part the WSU Tri-Cities Early Outreach program.

Simón Silva has talked to thousands of students of all ages nationwide, focusing on the importance of self-expression and developing personal creativity. His speeches include anecdotes from his childhood and his own journey toward a successful career as an artist.

Doors will open at 7:30 a.m. on Oct. 15, and Silva will speak at 8 a.m. at WSU Tri-Cities in the West Building Atrium. The lecture is free to the public.

Silva’s paintings depict stylized portraits of farm workers bending to harvest crops, suns radiating heat, and picturesque fields and valleys.

“My images are simplistic, powerful, beautiful and about the Chicano culture,” Silva said. “I have used these images – scenes I used to be ashamed of – to empower myself and other Chicanos.”

His 90-minute presentation session is in partnership with the Early Outreach program GEAR UP and the Associated Students of WSU Tri-Cities. The Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Program’s mission is to help middle school students and families understand how to prepare and plan for admission to a college or university after high school.
