WSU professors named to state Academy of Sciences

OLYMPIA – The Washington State Academy of Sciences has announced the election of 17 new members in recognition of their distinguished and continuing scientific achievements. Three are from WSU, including:

Thomas Besser, professor, School for Global Animal Health

Don Dillman, Regents Professor, departments of sociology and community and rural sociology, and deputy director of the Social and Economic Science Research Center

Poovaiah, B. W. (Joe), Regents Professor, Department of Horticulture
A fourth WSU professor and researcher, Terry McElwain, School for Global Animal Health, was inducted earlier this year by the WSAS after being named to the National Academy of Sciences.

The new members will be inducted into the WSAS at the third annual meeting in Kirkland, Wash., on Sept. 16. Those elected earlier this week bring the total number of active members to 128.
The Washington State Academy of Sciences provides expert scientific and engineering analysis to inform public policy making, and works to increase the role and visibility of science in the state of Washington.
Dr. James Thomas, one of the newly elected members, passed away Aug. 6. Dr. Thomas was founder of the National Visualization and Analytics Center and was recognized as the international leader in establishing the growing science of visual analytics. He served the national/international science community for nearly 40 years and will be inducted into the WSAS posthumously.
