Future Cougars of Color visitors up 56 percent

PULLMAN – This year, the number of students registered to attend the Future Cougars of Color Scholars Program at WSU is 380 – the largest in the program’s history and an overall increase of 56 percent over previous years.
Future Cougars of Color will take place on the Pullman campus April 1 and April 2. The program includes an annual visitation and a scholarship component, offering scholarships worth as much as $20,000 over four years.
This year’s high number of registered students is due, in part, to recruitment efforts by WSU enrollment counselors, better communication with prospective students and WSU’s increased popularity, said John Fraire, vice president for enrollment management at WSU.
All Washington state residents who have been offered admission to WSU for the fall semester can attend the Future Cougars of Color Program, although organizers say that space is limited and being eligible does not guarantee a spot at the event.
“The Future Cougars of Color visitation and scholarship program is one way WSU demonstrates a commitment to access and fairness, as most of those participating are first generation college students,” Fraire said. “Their families are very proud of them.”
During the Future Cougars of Color program some students will interview for scholarships. Award amounts include two $5,000, five $3,000 and eight $2,000 scholarships per year. Additionally, every student who attends the full program will receive a $1,000 scholarship to WSU renewable for three years, said Patty Winder, assistant director at WSU Scholarship Services.
Students will also have the opportunity to explore the Pullman campus and see what WSU has to offer students – including academic programs, campus life, housing options, campus involvement, leadership opportunities, and detailed information on financial aid and other university scholarships.
