As a public institution, the Washington State University is obligated to produce, upon request, any records or documents it keeps of its activities. This course, taking place Oct. 8 from 10:45 -11:45 a.m., is designed to acquaint managers with the basics of the Public Records Law, the types of records that are public and must be produced, WSU policy relating to public records and the process for responding thereto. Originating in Pullman, this course is available statewide through Academic Media Services.

This workshop discusses how to use WSU’s Business Policies and Procedures Manual, how the manual is updated and its history. Records scheduling, records retention and state records requirements are also discussed  This training takes place in Pullman on Wednesday, Oct. 8, from 9 -10:30 a.m. and is available statewide through AMS Videoconferencing.

Join the Outdoor Recreation Center and hike to the tallest waterfall in Idaho on Oct. 12! The hike is a 3-mile loop that travels through a dense conifer forest to three short spurs leading to the falls. After the hike, we will explore the town of Elk River where you’ll have the opportunity to purchase some delicious huckleberry flavored ice cream and pie! Have you been waiting for an opportunity to golf this year? Well here it is! University Recreation is holding a two-person intramural golf scramble on Saturday, Oct. 11. Each team will play one round of golf (18 holes) at the Palouse Ridge Golf Course. Teams should be prepared for either a morning or afternoon start. Tee time confirmations will be posted at urec.wsu.edu/imsports on Thursday, Oct. 9 by 5 p.m. Cost is $64 for student teams and $84 for faculty and staff teams. Registration ends Oct. 8. Soak up the last few days of sun and learn the sport of kayak touring on the Snake River! The ORC is holding a Kayak Touring Fundamental trip Oct. 11-12. Before the trip, there is a pool session to teach participants the necessary boat exit and rescue techniques. At the river, participants will learn how to prep and load a kayak before they embark on their overnight adventure! This trip has a level 2 rating, so no kayak experience is necessary! Registration is $75 for SRC members and $115 for non-members. The trip cost includes group gear, camping and kayaking gear, transportation, permits and trip leaders! Food is not included. There is a mandatory pre-trip meeting on Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. at the ORC. Registration ends Oct. 5 so sign up today at urec.wsu.edu/outdoor-recreation.

Kristin Arola will give a talk this Friday, October 3, in our ongoing colloquium series. Her reading will be held in the Bundy Reading Room of Avery Hall from noon to 1:00 p.m. Her presentation is entitled “Slow Composition: An Indigenous Approach to Digital Making.” Everyone is welcome to attend. The Office of Emergency Management will conduct our fall semester test of the WSUAlert system Wednesday, October 8, at 12:05 p.m. Faculty, staff and students associated with the Pullman campus who have signed up for notification will receive text messages, phone calls, and emails which will be clearly identified as a test. This test will also include the @WSUAlert twitter account and the campus outdoor warning sirens. (more…)

The Chicana Studies Colectiva at Washington State University celebrates Chican@ Latin@ Heritage Month with a day of education, arts and crafts, food and pláticas. This local hands-on computer lab, taking place from 9-11 a.m., will introduce you to Zotero, a free, open source alternative to reference manager systems such as EndNote and ProCite. Zotero allows you to easily save bibliographic details, comments, indexing terms, and direct links to webpages, word documents, and even articles that are in library subscription databases such as Worldwide Political Science Abstracts, JSTOR, and PubMed. When you are ready to write, you can use Zotero to integrate your references into your work in many citation styles using Microsoft Word. (more…)

You are invited to the Health Professions Student Center (HPSC) in CUE 502 to see our “WE MADE IT” bulletin board, which holds the many smiling faces of last year’s students who made it into the health professional school of their choice. We celebrated with over 150 students last spring and summer as we heard about our students’ acceptance, and then we snapped their photos! Fresh pressed cider, food and family fun are on the menu for the free, 2014 harvest party 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Washington State University organic farm.

Activities will include hay wagon rides, face painting and games.

Pumpkins, sold by weight, will be available from a U-pick pumpkin patch that includes traditional jack-o-lanterns, baby pumpkins and novelty varieties. (more…)
