WSU Press author to give readings at BookPeople of Moscow

University of Idaho professor of ethnography and Distinguished Humanities professor Rodney Frey will discuss his new book, Carry Forth the Stories: An Ethnographer’s Journey into Native Oral Tradition at BookPeople, 521 South Main Street in Moscow, Idaho, at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. The seasoned anthropologist/ethnographer will offer personal and professional insights into the power and value of storytelling, and the importance of empathy gleaned from more than forty years of working successfully with indigenous peoples.

Frey frames his “ethnographic memoir” as “the quest of an ethnographer to learn from his hosts and engage in collaborative, applied, ethical-based research, writing, and classroom pedagogy.” His experiences with collaborative research projects offer a model for others seeking to work with tribal communities. He shares facets of his own cancer journey seeking therapy from both Native and Western healing traditions. Throughout the book, Frey intertwines stories gathered from interviews, oral histories, personal experiences, and elders, offering lessons from the indigenous for us all.
