WSU Common Reading hosts Anne Anderson lecture Oct. 10 on ‘Virtual Design and Construction’

The Washington State University Common Reading Program hosts a lecture, Virtual Design and Construction: AR, VR, and Virtual Worlds in the Building Industry, by Anne Anderson at 4:30 p.m. on Tues., Oct. 10, in CUE 203.  This event is free and open to the public.

Anderson is an assistant professor of construction management.

People collaborate every day in video games like World of Warcraft, Eve Online, and Halo, where players join forces to battle an enemy. With the increasing use of emerging technologies in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry, and as more gamers enter the workforce, the field appears poised to embrace collaboration using augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and virtual worlds, said Anderson.

Before coming to WSU, Anderson spent 15 years working in the construction industry as a structural engineer and stays familiar with the industry’s current standards.

The Common Reading Program began in Pullman in 2006-2007 to help students, their teachers, and the community better engage in academically centered critical thinking, communication, research, and learning around a body of shared information presented in a single, specially selected book.

The WSU-wide common reading program for 2017-2019 is “frontiers of technology, health, and society.” The current common reading book, Ready Player One, highlights applications of technology in a variety of fields but also encourages exploration into ethical dilemmas and changing senses of identity that arise in an increasingly digital world.

The Common Reading program is currently accepting book nominations for the 2018-19 academic year. For more information about the Common Reading program, nominating a book, this year’s book, and upcoming events visit https://commonreading.wsu.edu/.
