W. Kamau Bell to speak at MLK Celebration on Jan. 23

The 2020 MLK Community Celebration will be held at WSU Pullman’s CUB Senior Ballroom on Thursday, Jan. 23 from 6:30 – 9 p.m. All campuses can also stream the event live at this link. To activate the stream, click the ‘play’ button for the event and enter your WSU credentials.

The event will feature keynote speaker W. Kamau Bell, who is the host of the Emmy Award-winning CNN series United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell, as well as a sociopolitical comedian and author. Kamau has been nominated for multiple NAACP Image Awards and a GLAAD award, and he was featured on Conde Nast’s ‘Daring 25’ list for 2016.

Bell will perform his one-man show “The W. Kamau Bell Curve: Ending Racism in About an Hour.” The “Curve” is a comedic, topical exploration of the current state of America’s racism, combined with a little (unknown) history, a little PowerPoint, and a whole bunch of Kamau. Learn more about W. Kamau Bell.

The MLK Community Celebration is free and open to the public. Overflow seating will be available in the CUB Junior Ballroom and CUE 202.

The 2020 MLK Community Celebration is part of WSU’s 33rd Annual MLK Program, a weeklong celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and legacy.

The weeklong celebration will include many other events, such as a Mindfulness Monday takeover, implicit bias workshops for students, faculty, and staff, film screenings, and more. Click here for the full list of MLK Program events.

To request access accommodations for any MLK event, please contact Heather McPherson at 509-335-5080 or heather.mcpherson@wsu.edu three days prior to the event. Our goal is to make all events fully accessible.
