Oct. 31 – Striving towards Excellence and Tangible Impact – Role of Entrepreneurism in a University

The paradigm in academia is shifting in ways that places an increasing emphasis on quantifying the impact of research. This can be seen both in the activities at many campuses across the US and in many of the new initiatives at the funding agencies. This increased focused on impact aligns well with WSU’s land grant mission and bolsters the current institutional focus: Advancing the WSU research enterprise, including enhancing industrial research partnerships, entrepreneurship, and innovation. This focus will be key as we strive to be “recognized as one of the nation’s top 25 US public research institutions, preeminent in research and discovery, teaching, and engagement by 2030,” as articulated by President Kirk Schultz.

WSU is poised to take on this challenge. Supported by a change in the legislative environment in 2005, both the Office of Research and many colleges across campus have invested in and developed programs that support entrepreneurship and industrial outreach. Programs like the Entrepreneurial Faculty Ambassadors and the NSF I Corps site at WSU offer just a few early examples of how WSU is evolving to foster an environment of University community-led entrepreneurism and efforts to creatively solve issues of regional, national and global significance.

Come learn about these programs and successful commercial outreach efforts from WSU.
