Multiscale Material Modeling and Simulation of the Mechanical Behavior of the Dual Phase Steels: Parametric Study and Microstructure Optimization
Presented by: Tarek Belgasam, PhD candidate, School of Mechanical & Materials Engineering, Washington State University
Abstract
Recently, there has been an increase in importance of the development of new dual phase (DP) steel grades, particularly for automotive industry. The mechanical behavior of DP steels with multiphase microstructure, used for example in lightweight car components, are difficult to predict. Minor changes in this microstructure (e.g. composition and morphology) may have considerable impacts on the mechanical properties of DP steels. Continued developments of Dual Phase steels, designed for specific applications, will need to design and optimize microscopic features to predict the specific mechanical properties for the desirable final properties. In order to design DP steel to its desired properties and specific applications, a multiscale material modeling approach is utilized along with a statistical and mathematical tool to create a comprehensive statistical parametric study and an efficient analytical methodology for verifying the optimum microstructure parameters under quasi-static and dynamic loading conditions. This talk will mainly focus on this methodology and how it is necessary to modify and optimize the setting of microstructure parameters interactively, to produce desirable materials for the intended application as well as towards various design requirements.
Biography
Tarek Belgasam is a PhD candidate from the mechanical and material engineering program. He obtained his MSc. and BSc. in mechanical engineering from Garyounis University. His research focus is on multiscale material model using automotive steels (DP steels), product modeling using coupling Digimat-CAE/LS-DYNA (explicit and implicit Simulation), and optimization techniques and tools. Beside his academic interest, Tarek is also enjoying working as internship position at Office of Commercialization (OC) for almost two years, he helps WSU researchers to translate their research and discoveries into innovations for the marketplace.
