International Programs-International Student and Scholar Services created, Kate Hellmann named director

IP-International Student and Scholar Services has been created from the reorganization of Global Services, the Intensive American Language Center (IALC) and the International Center. The faculty and staff in IP-International Student and Scholar Services support the internationalization of the Washington State University system by providing a comprehensive suite of aligned linguistic, social and cultural services to all international students and scholars to increase their success and retention in the WSU system. This includes advising, advocacy, career services, academic support and much more. On the linguistic end, the faculty team facilitates Academic English and pathways at INTO WSU, a dynamic joint venture at Washington State University that supports the academic and linguistic preparation of international undergraduate and graduate students across our WSU system. Together, the faculty and staff in IP-International Student and Scholar Services foster an inclusive and welcoming international community for students and scholars that support’s WSU’s Drive to 25.

Kate Hellmann was named Director of IP-International Student and Scholar Services. Kate has been a leader in international education as a faculty administrator and researcher for over a decade and has been at WSU for well over half that time. She has a Ph.D. in Education with a focus on International Education from the University of Idaho and a Master’s in Applied Linguistics/TESOL from Iowa State University. Kate conducts research on faculty experiences with international students in the classroom and beyond, international students and scholars, innovative teaching methodologies and integration of domestic and international communities. Her research and practice focus on the internationalization of higher education in the United States. She is also local to the area and grew up attending WSU football games with her family. She speaks Spanish and has traveled to 22 countries but is happy to continue to call WSU home.

“Kate will bring the IALC faculty, the International Center and Global Services together as one unit that supports all funnels of international students and scholars coming to WSU. Aligning and increasing services for all students and scholars will take commitment from all of our dedicated and talented faculty and staff but I know they are up to the challenge,” said International Programs Vice President Asif Chaudhry.
