On Ensemble puts a new spin on Taiko Tradition

On Ensemble will perform a concert in Daggy Hall on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 7:30 p.m., bringing their taiko drums and turntables to the stage of Jones Theatre.

The musicians weave jazz, rock, electronica and Central Asian overtone singing with the ancient Japanese Taiko drumming tradition, that is the heart of On Ensemble’s world fusion sound.

Reserved seating costs $18 adults, $15 seniors (ages 60 and up), and $9 non-WSU students and youth. WSU student admission is free with valid ID.

Tickets are on sale at all TicketsWest outlets, including online at TicketsWest.com, by phone at 800-325-SEAT, and in person at WSU’s Beasley Coliseum (open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday) or at the Daggy Hall box office beginning two hours before the performance.

Formed in 2002, On Ensemble is led by childhood friends Shoji Kameda and Masato “Maz” Baba. Kameda and Baba were instructed in Taiko by Baba’s parents, accomplished taiko players and jazz musicians Jeanne Mercer and Russel Baba.

The members of On Ensemble combine their study and deep appreciation of Japanese traditional music with equally formative experiences as DJs, jazz musicians, electronic music producers and rock bassists to create some of the most compelling Taiko music today.

On Ensemble is presented by Festival Dance and Performing Arts, in residence at the University of Idaho, and WSU Performing Arts. This project received support from WESTAF, the Western States Arts Federation; ArtsWA, the Washington State Arts Commission; and the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional support has been provided by the Residence Inn by Marriott Pullman and the Courtyard by Marriott Pullman.

Parking for this performance will be available without permits or fees in the Daggy Hall parking garage and in the Green 3 lot directly across the street from Daggy Hall.
