Department of Chemistry Seminar – Monday, March 30

The Department of Chemistry invites you to its departmental seminar on Monday, March 30, at 4:10 p.m. in Fulmer Hall, room 438.

Dr. Wiley J. Youngs from the University of Akron will present, The development of imidazolium salts and silver NHC complexes for the treatment of lung and bladder infections and cancer.

Abstract: This presentation will initially focus on the development of silver N-heterocyclic carbene complexes, from imidazolium salts, for the treatment of lung infections. Results from in vivo studies will be presented. The focus will then move to the synthesis and characterization of a library of imidazolium salts with moderate to high antitumor activity against a variety of non-small cell lung cancer cell lines in vitro. The antitumor activity of these salts is strongly related to the inclusion of aromatic, planar substituents in the N1 and N3 positions of the imidazole ring and the overall hydrophobic nature of the salts. The imidazole molecule presents a template that can be modified by standard synthetic techniques, allowing the chemist to easily modify the properties of the imidazolium salts so as to probe structure-activity relationships or add beneficial solubilizing or targeting groups to the salts. The inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of these imidazolium salts are comparable to the cancer chemotherapeutic cisplatin. The use of select imidazolium salts as chemical exfoliating reagents for the treatment of urinary tract infections will be the final focus of this presentation.
