The Academic Success and Career Center is seeking graduate assistants for the 2017-2018 academic year!

Academic Success Coach – Graduate Assistant serves in retention and outreach activities to the students of Washington State University (WSU). Academic Success Coaches will act as resource agents; provide mentoring and being a good role model. The Academic Success Graduate Assistant will have primary responsibility in facilitating a credit-bearing undergraduate course entitled UNIV 250-“College Success and Beyond.” Academic Success coaches need to demonstrate a commitment to serving students, specifically academically at-risk students and have the ability to relate to a variety of personality types and diverse groups of people.

Additionally, they will serve as an Academic Success Coach to the general student population at WSU through one on one appointments and workshops. Coaching will consist of individual, one-on-one meetings and workshops with students on topics such as time management, note taking, study strategies, goal setting, etc. They will also assist in training our peer tutor/mentors on academic coaching topics. Some evening and weekend hours may be required. Position duties and responsibilities will be performed in support of ASCC’s vision, mission and values as well as institutional mission and goals.

College Success Coach for foster youth

Assists in the implementation, administration and evaluation of programming for foster youth attending WSU with the Governor’s Scholarship and Passport to College Scholarship Program. Develops a mentoring, academic and personal coaching relationship with the scholars and creates a community of support. Assists students with transitioning to the university setting, persisting at WSU and graduating; Assists undergraduate students with setting and meeting educational and life goals. Position duties and responsibilities will be performed in support of ASCC’s vision, mission and values as well as institutional mission and goals.

Career Graduate Assistant staff support the office, working directly with students in the development of their career interests and aspirations. Assist students with a variety of issues, including appropriate course selection, major and career decision-making, internship exploration, job and graduate school search strategies. Provide drop-in support and career assistance to students on a first-come, first-served basis during regularly scheduled drop in hours. Assist in developing, facilitating, and evaluating academic courses and workshops related to success strategies, career/internship/graduate school exploration and employment search issues. Assist in the development and implementation of communication tools for faculty/staff within the ASCC and the campus related to career related topics. Position duties and responsibilities will be performed in support of ASCC’s vision, mission and values as well as institutional mission and goals.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • Full-Time, enrolled WSU graduate student for the 2017-2018 academic year
  • Must maintain a full-time academic load and a 3.0 cumulative GPA for the duration of the assistantship.
  • Demonstrated commitment to customer service.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite (e.g. Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, etc.)

 Preferred Qualifications:

    • Strong written and oral communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills;
    • Experience working with diverse populations;
  • Experience conducting workshops and presentations;
  • Experience performing database management, records maintenance, and organization within an office environment;
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including some evenings or weekends;
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks, take initiative, and solve problems.

 

Compensation

Compensation includes a salary for nine months (.5 FTE) and graduate student health insurance ($14,953.00 approximate value).
