ASCC opens academic hotline

You’ve got questions, the Academic Success and Career Center has answers.

The University has established an “academic hotline” for WSU Pullman students, faculty and staff. The hotline is available to provide information, resources and referrals to those in need.

The hotline is accessible by phone at 509-335-6000 or email at FallAcademicsPullman@wsu.edu.

“The idea was to provide a single portal for academic-related questions and issues, so that students and families would not have to search for the appropriate office,” said Mary Wack, vice provost for academic engagement and student achievement. “We can do the routing for them and get the issue to the right person.”

Three ASCC staff members will respond to phone inquiries during business hours and two staff members are responding to incoming emails. The staffing is a shared responsibility among staff from across the Division of Academic Engagement and Student Achievement and will be adjusted as needed.

The ASCC regularly handles a wide variety of inquiries from students and the WSU community and is well suited to house the hotline.

“ASCC often serves as the front line regarding calls from students, their families and various stakeholders across the WSU system with regard to academic advising, advising assignments, advisor availability, change of major, adding minors, tutoring and academic support programs,” said Terese King, ASCC director and executive director of University Advising. “Having ASCC field these types of questions is a natural extension of what we already do. Our role is to provide an answer and/or refer the inquiry to the appropriate person or office best suited to address the concern or question.”

Given the nuances of distance learning and the number of questions rising from the recent change, the hotline staff is connecting with offices throughout WSU to find answers to almost any inquiry.

“Although the purpose of the hotline is to respond to academic-related questions, we recognize that when students and their families call the University, they often have more than one question,” King said. “ASCC is prepared to assist in finding the answers to questions outside the academic arena by partnering with offices across the University to get students connected with the right resources.”
