Safety, Health and Security Fair hosting flash talks, blood drive

Don't fear the Safety, Health and Security Fair.
The 2019 WSU Safety, Health and Security Fair is happening Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in and around the Compton Union Building.

Worried that you’re not getting the kind of restful sleep you need to be your best? Are you interested in yoga but don’t know where to start?

Fear not. Washington State University’s annual Safety, Health and Security Fair is happening from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 22 inside the Compton Union Building’s Senior and Junior ballrooms.

Flash Talks, where attendees can learn more about sleep—including how to make workplace naps work for you—are new to this year’s event. Keeping yourself safe online and in‑person as well as advice on healthy eating on a budget are among the day’s other scheduled talks. The day’s presentations end with a yoga class hosted by Sanctuary Yoga. All talks will be happening inside the CUB Jr. Ballroom.

A flash talk on safely cycling in traffic and general bike safety is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.  Visitors can also sign up for several future classes—mental health first aid, suicide survivors support groups and how to use a fire extinguisher among the offerings.

More than 50 vendors are scheduled to make presentations or have booths at this year’s event. Attendees will also have their chance to help others in need by participating in an American Red Cross blood drive or by seeing if they’re a vital bone marrow match. The blood drive runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. inside the CUB senior ballroom. Anyone wishing to donate is asked to sign up ahead of time.

Volunteers are needed to make the event’s blood drive a success, and those interested in lending a hand can sign up online.

An awards ceremony will also recognize the outstanding health, safety and security contributions made by individuals and groups across the university. The ceremony begins at 12:15 p.m. and is being held in the CUB Senior Ballroom.
