Washington State University’s School of Music is hosting a free concert featuring the symphony orchestra and opera, 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, at the Fox Theatre in Spokane.

“A Musical Potpourri” celebrates music for all future Cougs, alumni, music fans and friends. The WSU Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Danh Pham, and the WSU Opera is directed by Julie Anne Wieck.

The concert opens with the “Overture to Merry Wives of Windsor,” conducted by graduate student Angelina Gomez. The full opera will be presented in Bryan Hall Theatre on the WSU Pullman campus on April 12-13. Members of the cast will perform additional selections from the opera.

Traditional Chinese Folk Songs will feature School of Music faculty member Ruth Boden on cello. Boden recently performed these tunes in China, during her recent residency at Guangzhou University.

Senior performance major, Garrett Snedeker, winner of the 2017 Washington State Music Teachers Association Young Artist Piano Competition, will repeat his performance of Prokofiev’s “Piano Concerto No. 3.”  Snedeker originally performed with the WSU Symphony Orchestra as a winner in the WSU Concerto/Aria Competition

Also featured in the program will be movements I and III from Ralph Vaugnh Williams’ “English Folk Song Suite” and Dvorak’s “Finale from Symphony No. 8 in G,” featuring guest conductor Zhongyun Luo, director of orchestral studies at Guangzhou University.

The concert ends with John Williams’ “Jedi Steps and Finale,” bringing the event to a rousing conclusion. Pham notes, “The orchestra is pleased to share their music in Spokane in a devoted attempt to bring more WSU music outside of Pullman.”
