Highway 26 detour for bridge repairs set

A portion of State Route 26 runs above railroad tracks east of Othello and that bridge deck needs to be replaced after years of patching.

A six‑week bridge repair project that will close a portion of a popular travel route between Pullman and Puget Sound is scheduled to begin Oct. 15, affecting potentially heavy traffic for at least three WSU home football games, according to the Washington Department of Transportation.

The bridge, located east of Othello along State Route 26, spans two primary BNSF railroad tracks and needs deck repairs that require closing the highway. A 32‑mile detour will take motorists around the closed portion.

In addition to traveling football fans, which state officials say typically doubles the average traffic levels along the stretch of highway, it could affect students headed to Puget Sound for Thanksgiving break, which begins Nov. 19. The repairs are expected to be complete by Nov. 22.

The state Department of Transportation’s website has more information about the project.
