New academic year is under way

Freshman students lined up on the Cougar football field in the shape of WSU.
The 2018 class of first-year students is the largest in WSU history.

Not only do early enrollment figures show the largest freshman class in WSU history, there’s a record number of Honors College students as well, about 10 percent more transfer students and an average incoming GPA that’s climbed past the 3.4 mark.

“As we begin our fall semester this week, I would ask that everyone go the extra mile to welcome the new members of the Cougar nation to our campus,” Provost Dan Bernardo said in a letter to faculty and staff. “WSU is known to be a welcoming, tight-knit community, and we need to demonstrate this every day as these students begin their higher education journey. If you see a student or parent, please welcome them to campus, and if they look lost or are looking at a map, stop and offer assistance. These small gestures can go a long way in assuring our students feel welcome.”

Final enrollment numbers for all WSU campuses are still being tallied.

Academic calendars for all campuses for the 2018-19 year can be found at the Registrar’s Office website.

A student resource guide is available through the Academic Success and Career Center’s website.
