PULLMAN, Wash. – A free community safety fair to help children learn first-hand about “stop, drop and roll” and how firefighters put out a fire, will be presented 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, June 30, at the Brelsford WSU Visitor Center, 150 E. Spring St. in Pullman.
Families also will get a first-hand look at a police car and drones, speak with a dispatcher, and learn about environmental and general health and safety.
Free snacks and beverages, including Smoky Cheddar — one of 11 cheese flavors produced by the WSU Creamery — will be available, along with the chance to win a variety of raffle prizes beginning at 10:30 a.m. Raffle tickets will be drawn periodically throughout the event and have been provided by a number of local partners, including Cougar Country Drive-in, Sweet Mutiny, Starbucks, Pups & Cups Café and more.
The Pullman Fire Department will coordinate an array of hands-on fire safety activities. Firefighters will lead children and adults through an agility training course on the visitor center lawn that will include a cut-out house prop with “fire” in need of extinguishing with a hose.
Fire trucks, an ambulance, police vehicles and vehicle extrication tools will be on display. Interactive fire extinguisher and police drone demonstrations will be ongoing and at noon a complete vehicle extrication will occur — showing from start to finish how a person trapped inside is safely removed.
An emergency and safety resource fair featuring various WSU and Pullman agencies will occur inside the visitor center. Represented agencies include WSU Environmental Health and Safety, WSU Health and Wellness, WSU Emergency Management, Whitcom, WSU Police Department, Pullman Police Department, Pullman Fire Department and others.
Families can speak with trained child seat technicians, who will be available to conduct child seat inspections upon request, and CPR demonstrations also will be offered.
Free public parking for the event is available in both the Pullman and WSU campus parking lots along Spring Street. The WSU campus parking lot will be signed as a Yellow 3 lot and permits are not required on Saturdays.
