PULLMAN, Wash. – It is anticipated that more than 500 multicultural freshman and transfer students will attend Washington State University’s CONEXION Orientation Program, 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20, in the Compton Union Building senior and junior ballrooms.
Organized by WSU’s Office of Multicultural Student Services (MSS), CONEXION is a well-established event designed to welcome new students and offer them the opportunity to meet their student mentors, transfer student ambassadors, MSS tutors and student leaders.
Manuel Acevedo, director of MSS, said the program shows new students there is a strong community of support that will help them along their educational journey at WSU.
“At this event the MSS staff, along with student mentors, leaders and partners across campus, add to the legacy of inclusion, affirmation, and support for our diverse student body,” he said.
Mary Jo Gonzales WSU vice president for Student Affairs, will provide opening remarks, and Jordan Frost, Associated Students of Washington State University president, will talk about student life at WSU.
The program will include an information fair to help connect participants with student organizations, colleges, departments and student services. They also will have an opportunity to tour the multicultural student centers on the fourth floor of the Compton Union Building.
MSS staff and mentors reached out to new students during the summer via letters, postcards and emails. CONEXION is the first large-scale event for them once they arrive on campus.
