PULLMAN, Wash. – The chemistry department recently joined 11 other Washington State University units that are participants in the Ph.D. fellowship program of ARCS Foundation Seattle. Achievement Rewards for College Scientists helps give WSU a competitive edge in recruiting top graduate students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields.
“The generous sponsorship of ARCS Foundation creates opportunities for doctoral students that ultimately benefit the world,” said Bill Andrefsky, dean of the WSU Graduate School.
WSU began participating in 1999. ARCS Foundation fellows enhance their graduate experiences with interdisciplinary work with fellows from other departments and mentorship from ARCS Foundation donors, who are strong community supporters. Participating WSU programs are in the colleges of Arts and Sciences; Agricultural, Human and Natural Resource Sciences; Veterinary Medicine and Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture.
Founded in 1978, ARCS Foundation Seattle has supported 1,167 fellows with awards totaling more than $16.3 million. It currently supports 154 Ph.D. students at WSU and the University of Washington. A national organization of 16 chapters serving 55 research universities, ARCS Foundation has awarded more than $90 million in financial support to more than 9,000 students nationwide.
