PULLMAN, Wash. – Long-term study abroad opportunities for students through the Boren Awards for International Study program will be discussed by assistant director Susan Sharp at 12:10 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, in Smith CUE 407 at Washington State University. Pizza will be served.
Boren Awards of up to $20,000 allow undergraduate and graduate students to study abroad to learn less common languages used in regions considered critical to U.S. interests. The awards help launch careers in international affairs and national security in part because winners commit to work for the government for at least one year following college graduation.
Seventeen WSU students have received Boren Awards since 2000 and pursued language studies in China, Taiwan, Russia, Thailand and Tanzania.
The awards are named after David L. Boren, principal author of legislation that created the National Security Education Program (NSEP). Sharp works for the Boren program at its main office in Washington, D.C.
