PULLMAN, Wash. – The new Global Hero Project invites international students at Washington State University to submit an essay or other writing about inspirational civil rights leaders from their countries. The submission deadline is Nov. 28.
Hosted by the Martin Luther King Jr. program at WSU, International Programs and the International Student Center, the project is a way to include global perspectives in discussions leading up to the WSU MLK Community Celebration in January.
“The full integration of international students into the WSU community enriches them as well as all of us,” said Ana Maria Rodriguez-Vivaldi, associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences and project coordinator, adding that part of WSU’s mission is to graduate global citizens who can successfully interact in an increasingly diverse environment.
“Though civil rights may not be universal, as they depend on the code of laws of every country, the basic rights we should all enjoy by the sole fact that we are human are universal,” she said.
The top three submissions will receive $300, $200 and $100 educational scholarships. Each will also receive a ticket to attend the Latah County Human Rights Task Force Breakfast in Moscow, Idaho, on Jan. 21.
