Oct. 6, 11: Symphonic and jazz bands perform at WSU

alison-poterackePULLMAN, Wash. – A powerful work by Leonard Bernstein and a new jazz piece by graduate student Alison Poteracke will highlight free, public concerts by the Washington State University School of Music.

* The Symphonic Band and Symphonic Wind Ensemble will feature faculty guests, including Martin King performing Brian Balmages’ “Pele” for solo horn and wind ensemble, at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, in Bryan Hall.

Works by John Williams, John Mackey, James Stephenson and Andrew Boss will be presented. The concert will conclude with the WSU Faculty Brass headlining on Bernstein’s “Suite from Mass” for brass quintet and wind ensemble.

* Jazz Band I, under the direction of Brian Ward, and Jazz Band II, under the direction of Poteracke, will perform at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, in Kimbrough Hall. They will present works by Count Basie, Maria Schneider, WSU faculty member Greg Yasinitsky and grad student Poteracke.

She is a prolific jazz composer whose music has been performed by jazz bands in the northern California region. Jazz Band I will perform her new composition, “Insomnia.”
