BURLINGTON, Wash. – Diane Smith and Susie Craig, Washington State University Extension, each earned regional awards recently from a national association for meeting family and community food health and education needs.
Smith, regional specialist in Skagit and Whatcom counties, was honored by the National Extension Association for Family and Consumer Science Services in the community partnership category for leadership in fostering partnerships for health promotion and healthy foods for families. Development of Skagit Food for Skagit People and an area anti-hunger coalition has resulted in expanded program delivery and a successful U.S. Department of Agriculture food planning grant application.
Craig, WSU Snohomish County Extension, and her team received an educational curriculum award from the association for “What’s On Your Plate? Exploring Food Science.” This national, inquiry-based, food science curriculum for middle school students is sponsored and marketed by the National 4-H Council. The STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) curriculum package includes a teaching plan, facilitator guide and evaluation method.
