she-kills-monsters-detailPULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University Performing Arts invites community members to audition for one or both of the plays it will produce this year, “Eurydice” by Sarah Ruhl and “She Kills Monsters” by Qui Nguyen.

Auditions will be 6-9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 4 and 5, in Wadleigh Theatre at Daggy Hall, with callbacks beginning at 6 p.m. on Oct. 6. Six performances of “Eurydice” are scheduled for Dec. 1, 3, 8, 9 and 10. Six performances of “She Kills Monsters” will take place March 31, April 1, 7 and 8.

eurydice-webActors of all experience levels, at least 14 years old and with no upper age limit, are welcome. No preparation is required and it is only necessary to attend one audition session.

“Eurydice” reimagines the classic myth of Orpheus through the eyes of its heroine. Dying too young on her wedding day, Eurydice must journey to the underworld where she reunites with her father and struggles to remember her lost love.

With contemporary characters, ingenious plot twists and breathtaking visual effects, the play is a fresh look at a timeless love story. The New York Times called it “an inexpressibly moving theatrical fable about love, loss and the pleasures and pains of memory.”

“She Kills Monsters,” a comedic romp into the world of fantasy role-playing games, tells the story of Agnes Evans as she leaves her childhood home in Ohio following the death of her teenage sister, Tilly. When Agnes finds Tilly’s Dungeons & Dragons notebook, however, she stumbles into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was Tilly’s refuge.

she-kills-monsters-webIn this high-octane dramatic comedy laden with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres and ’90s pop culture, acclaimed young playwright Qui Nguyen offers a heart-pounding homage to the geek and warrior within us all. According to the Chicago Tribune, “Nguyen is a refreshing, break-the-rules writer – he has a ready embrace of pop culture, high-school speak and High Fidelity cool. ‘She Kills Monsters’ delivers exactly what it promises and is generally a blast.”

Both plays are presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc. For more information, contact Mary Trotter at mary.trotter@wsu.edu or Benjamin Gonzales at bgonzales@wsu.edu. Parking information and directions to Daggy Hall are available at http://www.performingarts.wsu.edu.
