Sept. 29, 30: Students featured in two free concerts

machado-mijigaPULLMAN, Wash. – Vocal student Andrew Turner will highlight a Washington State University Symphony Orchestra concert this month, and saxophone student Machado Mijiga will present a free recital.

Turner will sing opera favorites for tenor voice with the symphony at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, in Kimbrough Hall. The free concert will open with Rossini’s opera overture to “The Italian in Aligiers.” The closing piece will be Saint-Saens’s programmatic work, “The Carnival of the Animals,” featuring faculty members Jeff and Karen Savage on piano.

At 3:10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, in Kimbrough Hall, Mijiga will perform “Mirror Images:” two movements of Paul Creston’s “Sonata for Eb Alto Saxophone, Op. 19” and two installments from Ben Wendel’s most recent album, “What We Bring.”
