PULLMAN, Wash. – Teens from the Coeur D’Alene Tribe are learning academic and other skills through Friday at the 12th annual STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics), Leadership and Sports Camp at Washington State University.
“This is such a meaningful experience for the kids who participate,” said co-organizer Paula Groves Price, associate dean for diversity in the WSU College of Education. “They learn some life skills, but they also have a lot of fun.”
The camp is for 13-17 year olds from the Coeur d’Alene Reservation. The purpose is to develop leadership and academic skills and to have fun in activities that range from kickball to capture the flag. There are workshops about soil, erosion and farming, as well as activities dealing with indigenous issues.
Groves Price said while the kids enjoy the camp, there’s a long-term investment being made: “This week gives the kids the opportunity to experience college life, then helps them prepare to meet their goals for the future.”
