WSU students earn state honors for community service

PULLMAN, Wash. – Students from four Washington State University campuses earned state honors for community leadership and service recently from Washington Campus Compact.

The newly created Presidents’ Awards, part of the Students Serving Washington Awards program (http://studentserviceawards.org), went to:

Roy Puchalski, WSU Pullman. On staff of the WSU Center for Civic Engagement, he regularly leads peers on community service projects. He has amassed over 580 hours of service volunteering with Harvest House rehabilitative home, Orphan Acres horse rescue and Palouse Bicycle Collective.

Kari Whitney, Global Campus student senator living in Tacoma, Wash. She interviewed and wrote narratives of clients for the FISH Food Banks of Pierce County. These will help the food banks increase local support by tying personal stories to issues surrounding food insecurity.

Sean Philbrook and Shain Wright, WSU Vancouver. They helped students become more involved in civil discourse and diversity. Philbrook coordinates the Initiative for Public Deliberation, while Wright is student government president and a member of the Student Diversity Center’s strategic planning team.

Brent Ellis, Melanie Ford and Elinor Lake, WSU Tri-Cities. Ellis helped plan and build a Habitat for Humanity house for a family of Burmese refugees. Ford researched the impact of climate change on Washington agriculture. Lake helped redesign the campus recycling program to reduce waste. See an earlier WSU Tri-Cities article about these students at https://news.wsu.edu/2016/04/26/wsu-tri-cities-students-earn-statewide-honors-service/.
