April 21: Faculty to discuss new academic integrity plan

PULLMAN, Wash. – At the next faculty-led workshop, professor Phyllis Erdman and Adam Jussel, director of the Office of Student Conduct, will discuss academic integrity and the 2015 Academic Integrity Task Force report.

The task force, created at the request of the Washington State University provost and the Faculty Senate, identified best practices for creating a culture of academic integrity. The task force is  in the process of working with the Faculty Senate to implement these approaches, which include mandatory training and reporting, new syllabus statements and exam recommendations.

“We want to change the culture of academic integrity without making it punitive,” said Erdman, who co-chaired the task force with Jussel. “We’ll provide an overview of the task force, what it was asked to look at and what deliverables that has brought.”

Establishing a Culture of Academic Integrity will be held at 12:10 p.m. Thursday, April 21, in CUE 518, and will also be livestreamed. Lunch will be provided. Please register here.

“Our approach is that we want all students to be fully informed of what cheating and plagiarism is, so they know when they do it,” Erdman said. “Then we hold them up to some reasonable level of accountability.”

The workshop series is sponsored by the WSU Provost’s Office, WSU Teaching Academy and WSU Learning Innovations.
