April 14-19: Free concerts span music styles

piano-duoPULLMAN, Wash. – Five free, public concerts in the next two weeks will feature various music styles presented by faculty, students and guests artists at Washington State University:

Guest piano duo Christina Dahl, Stony Brook University, and Oksana Ezhokina, Pacific Lutheran University, will perform Mozart’s “Sonata for Piano Four Hands in C Major, K. 521,” and Rachmaninoff’s “Suite No. 1 for Two Pianos, Op. 5” and “Symphonic Dances for Two Pianos, Op. 45” at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, in Kimbrough Concert Hall.

Jazz trombonist Bill Watrous and the WSU Jazz Band will perform beloved jazz standards arranged for big band from his albums “Kindred Spirits” and “A Beautiful Friendship” at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, in Bryan Hall.

The WSU Symphonic Band and Symphonic Wind Ensemble will be joined by guest faculty soloists at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 14, in Bryan Hall. Sarah Miller, WSU, will perform Derek Bourgeois’ “Concerto for Trombone,” second movement, and Chris Whyte, Portland, Ore., will perform John Mackey’s “Drum Music.”

Contemporary composer and flutist Zachery S. Meier will present his graduate recital at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 16, in Daggy Hall’s Jones Theatre. His premieres will include “Not with You,” voice and piano; “Azure Roads,” tuba and piano; “Trio for Flute, Cello and Piano;” “The Journey,” chamber orchestra; and “Reigniere,” wind ensemble.

“Pictures at an Exhibition” by the WSU Orchestra, will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, in Bryan Hall. It will include Gliere’s fiery overture from “Russlan and Ludmilla,” Carl Reinecke’s “Concerto for Flute,” third movement, and Mussorgsky’s tour-de-force “Pictures at an Exhibition.”
