March 31 deadline: Register for women’s leadership institute

new-leadership-webPULLMAN, Wash. – College women statewide may register through March 31 for the NEW (National Education for Women) Leadership Summer Institute June 2-7 at Washington State University Pullman.

Space is limited. Register at http://women.wsu.edu/new-leadership-at-wsu/apply-to-new-leadership/.

The six-day, residential, nonpartisan training program is organized by WSU’s Women’s Resource Center and welcomes students of all majors. Participants will hone their skills by engaging with women leaders in politics and civic organizations, being mentored by female faculty-in-residence and participating in a hands-on political action project related to women’s issues.

While the curriculum largely follows that developed by the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University, the institute’s founder, WSU will tailor the workshops to address the underrepresentation of women in leadership roles in Washington.

WSU previously hosted the institute eight times beginning in 2002 but it was discontinued during the economic downturn. The state nonprofit Women’s Funding Alliance (WFA) funded the WSU Women’s Resource Center to re-establish the institute.

WSU’s NEW Leadership Institute boasts over 200 alumni. Among them, one attended the Seattle University School of Law, several interned in city and county offices, many decided to attend graduate school and others have volunteered in community organizations or accepted international posts in education.

“By the conclusion of this program the participants will see themselves as leaders and know the value of networking and asking questions,” said Heidi Stanton Schnebly, interim director of the Women’s Resource Center. “They will discover the power of their voices.”
