PULLMAN, Wash. – Canada’s acclaimed neo-traditional music group The Duhks (pronounced “ducks”) will perform at Washington State University at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 4, in Daggy Hall’s Jones Theatre.
The band earned a Juno Award (the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy) for Best Roots & Traditional Album with their 2005 release “The Duhks,” coproduced by Béla Fleck, and received a Grammy nomination for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with “Heaven’s My Home,” a song from their 2006 album “Migrations.”
Reserved seating costs $16 adults, $13 seniors (ages 60+) and $8 non-WSU students and youth. WSU students will be admitted free with valid ID. A discounted rate of $12 per person is available for groups of eight or more.
Tickets are on sale at TicketsWest outlets, including online at TicketsWest.com, by phone at 800-325-SEAT (7328) and in person at WSU’s Beasley Coliseum (open 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Friday) and the Rosauers supermarket in Lewiston, Idaho. Free student tickets require WSU ID and are available in advance only at the Beasley Coliseum ticket office. Same-day tickets will be sold at the Daggy Hall box office beginning two hours before the performance, subject to availability.
Since forming in Winnipeg in 2001, The Duhks (http://duhks.com/) have played a significant role in the neo-folk revival and have created a dynamic blend of old-timey, French Canadian and Celtic music punched up with shades of blues, soul and driving Afro Cuban rhythms.
They recently released their fifth album, “Beyond the Blue” (Compass Records, 2014), energized by the return of vocalist Jessee Havey and the addition of new members Rosie Newton on fiddle, Kevin Garcia on drums/percussion and Colin Savoie-Levac on guitar and bouzouki.
Musically, the album is reminiscent of the eclectic “Migrations,” but with a sound even denser and grittier than 2008’s “Fast Paced World.”
“The goal with the new record was to draw on everything we’ve learned over the years and everything we know about where we want to take the music now and create something as fresh, exciting and forward-thinking as possible,” said The Duhks founder Leonard Podolak.
