Jan. 14-March 25: Collectors’ art exhibited; reception Jan. 21

By Debby Stinson, Museum of Art

PULLMAN, Wash. – Works from the family collection of a longtime Northwest gallery owner will be on exhibit Jan. 14-March 25 at the Washington State University Museum of Art. A free, public reception will be 6-8 pm Thursday, Jan. 21, in the museum gallery with a 20-30 minute walk-through by the collectors.

Seattle gallerist Greg Kucera and his husband Larry Yocom have built an extensive private art collection over 30 years. It focuses on contemporary and historic works of the Northwest while including significant pieces by internationally known artists. It contains objects by self-taught makers, decorative arts from around the world and erotica, including Japanese shunga woodblock prints.

Please note this exhibit contains some adult images and themes.

Kucera said the collection was built “with eyes that remain fresh and a sensibility that regards contemporary art as the moving target it always is.”

The exhibit honors the collectors’ selectivity and reflects further shaping by museum curators. It surveys a cultural ecosystem where artist, dealer, collector, curator and the public make key contributions.

The Museum of Art is located on Wilson Road across from Martin Stadium in the Fine Arts Center on the WSU Pullman campus. Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Saturday and open until 7 p.m. Thursday. For more information, please contact the museum at 509-335-1910 or visit the website at http://museum.wsu.edu.

Funding for the exhibit is provided by Greg Kucera and Larry Yocom, the WSU Friel Memorial Art Lecture Endowment and members of the WSU Museum of Art.
