Oct. 7: Business lecture considers ethics, shareholder value

Symetra-CEO-Tom-Marra-webPULLMAN, Wash. – “Business Ethics: Doing the Right Thing to Optimize Long-Term Shareholder Value” will be presented at 4:30-5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, in the Carson College of Business, Todd 116, Washington State University. The 23rd annual Walton Lecture, free to the public, will be presented by Thomas Marra, president and chief executive officer of Symetra Financial.

Founded in 1957, Symetra is Washington state’s largest life insurance company. It  provides employee benefits, annuities and life insurance through a national network of benefit consultants, financial institutions, independent agents and advisors.

Marra joined Symetra in 2010 and has over 30 years of industry experience. He is past chairman of the boards of the American Council of Life Insurers and the National Association of Variable Annuities, now known as the Insured Retirement Institute (IRI). In 2011, he was inducted into the IRI Hall of Fame in recognition of his contributions and leadership in retirement planning.

Each fall, the Walton Lecture brings a distinguished leader in the insurance and risk management field to campus to share professional perspectives with students. The lecture is hosted by the WSU Carson College of Business’ Department of Finance and Management Science and made possible through an endowment from the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of Washington. The endowment honors Max Walton, the group’s past-president.
