AkmalPULLMAN, Wash. – The College of Education has named Tariq Akmal as interim chair of the Department of Teaching and Learning at Washington State University.

He replaces Darcy Miller, who steps down after years of dedicated service to focus more fully on scholarly work in special education.

Akmal (https://education.wsu.edu/takmal/) has been with the college since 1998. A former middle school teacher, he has served as the college’s director of teacher education since 2011.

“Not only does Tariq have real-world experience as a teacher, but he has stayed up-to-date on the issues and challenges that face both the education and teaching fields,” said college dean Mike Trevisan. “He is also well suited for this role because he has dedicated himself so fully to the department and its students for so long. He cares deeply about student success, and students in turn have a great respect for him.”

The department (https://education.wsu.edu/college/tl/) has the college’s teacher education degree, as well as a variety of graduate degrees.
